As of a few weeks, first rumors and then pictures proved the existence of the black or melanistic serval in the park. Those animals are very hard to observe, because of their rarity and the fact that they are rather discreet.
Its colour is only a genetical anomaly, it isn’t a subspecies of the serval. They certainly are the product of two parents with a spotted fur.
His black color makes the animal much more visible in the savana.
My friend Tony Crocetta, had given me the name of a place where we could see one (there are only three in the park). We went there and got lucky enough to be able to observe for two hours while alone. The only issue was that he was a little too faraway to get really beautiful pictures.
But what a luck it was to have been able to observe it. It’s a memory that is never leaving me.
